Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to cover the main trends in the line graph, providing an overview and specific data points for copper, nickel, and zinc in 2014. However, the interpretation of the data contains several significant inaccuracies. For example, the student states that there is a 'huge decline in the price of nickel' overall, whereas nickel actually fluctuates significantly, starting high and ending with similar or mixed values. Furthermore, the descriptions of zinc and copper contain confusing and incorrect claims, such as 'value of zinc rise from first 3 months... afterthat shows a declining trend', which contradicts the visual data where zinc dips mid-year and recovers. The response is also incomplete, trailing off abruptly at the end. These flaws place the task achievement in Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response shows some basic organization with an introductory sentence, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs. However, paragraphing is poorly handled, with the second body paragraph cutting off mid-sentence. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'While, the value of zinc rise...' and 'in contrast, value of copper fluctuating over a period of time'. Logical progression is frequently disrupted by grammatical errors and poor punctuation, such as missing spaces after commas and periods. Referencing is also confusing, making it difficult to follow the relationships between ideas. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is rather basic and repetitive, relying on terms like 'price', 'metals', 'decline', and 'increase'. There are several word choice and spelling errors throughout the text, such as 'depriciated alot' instead of 'depreciated a lot', 'declinling' for 'declining', and missing capitalization at the beginning of sentences ('In january'). The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'fluctuating' and 'depreciated', but control is weak, and inaccuracies are noticeable. This level of lexical resource corresponds to Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response features a very limited range of grammatical structures, and attempts at complex or compound sentences often result in faulty punctuation and syntax. There are numerous basic grammatical errors, including tense inconsistencies ('value of zinc rise', 'value of nickel was also started gradually declinling') and persistent punctuation errors (spaces missing after commas and periods). Furthermore, the sentence structure breaks down completely at the very end of the text ('Moreover, afterwards nickel leveled off and started in'). These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader and align with Band 5.0 descriptors.
