Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to summarise the main features of the graph showing the average monthly change in metal prices, noting key trends such as nickel starting high and fluctuating, and copper and zinc showing various movements. However, there are significant inaccuracies in reporting the data (for instance, misreading the year as 2024 instead of 2014, and describing zinc as remaining stable when it actually fluctuates considerably). The overview is also rather confused and lacks clarity. Because some data points are misread or poorly developed, the response meets the criteria for Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by awkward transitions and confusing statements. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or incorrectly (e.g., 'Afterthat rise significantly', 'Therefore, showed a increase'). Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is frequently faulty, resulting in an overall score of 5.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for a basic description of the chart, but it contains noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and collocation (e.g., 'charges' instead of 'changes', 'highest rate', 'osscilates', 'jaunary', 'demcember'). There are also awkward phrasings like 'proportion of changes in the amount of metals'. While the writer attempts less common vocabulary, the errors cause some difficulty for the reader, placing this at Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('zinc showed a highest rate', 'zinc... showed are surged'), incorrect prepositions ('in the month of june and october'), and punctuation or capitalization errors. These errors often impede communication, aligning with the Band 5 descriptor.
