Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response attempts to cover the main features of the line graph showing the average monthly change in prices for copper, nickel, and zinc in 2014. The writer successfully identifies some key data points, such as nickel peaking in January around 6 percent and falling to -3 percent in June. However, there are significant issues with data accuracy and interpretation. For instance, the writer states that copper reached its highest point in January at approximately 2 percent, whereas the graph shows copper at 2 percent in January but also highlights other movements. The overview is weak and repetitive, failing to clearly summarize the overall trends. Furthermore, the description of December values for nickel and zinc contains slight inaccuracies compared to the raw data. Overall, the task is addressed only partially, warranting a Band 5.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The essay is divided into an introduction and two body paragraphs, showing an attempt at logical structure. However, paragraphing and referencing are poorly managed. The second and third paragraphs lack clear overall progression and cohesive devices are frequently mechanical or misused, as seen in repetitive sentence starters like 'The nickel is...' and 'The copper is...'. Transitional expressions are virtually absent, and the spacing around punctuation marks (e.g., spaces before commas) detracts from the professional layout of the text. While the overall arrangement is somewhat coherent, the lack of sophisticated linking words and faulty referencing keep this criterion at a Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple verbs and adjectives such as 'highest', 'fall', 'rise', and 'peak'. There are numerous lexical and spelling errors throughout the text, including 'illustartes', 'pricing', 'feburary', 'decemeber', and 'dramatically up'. The range of vocabulary is limited and barely adequate for the task, with awkward phrasing like 'was changes in the period' and 'reached on the 1'. While the reader can understand the intended meaning, the frequent errors and lack of less common lexical items restrict the score to a Band 5.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the price of copper , nickel and zinc was changes'), missing prepositions ('highest on the month'), and incorrect verb forms ('As we can be seen'). Punctuation is also poorly handled, with irregular spacing before punctuation marks and run-on structures. Although some sentences are grammatically correct, the frequency of errors causes noticeable distraction and difficulty for the reader, fitting the Band 5.0 descriptors.
