Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response attempts to address the prompt by reporting information on the average monthly price changes of copper, nickel, and zinc in 2014. However, the interpretation of the graph contains significant inaccuracies and misreadings of the data. For instance, the student states that the maximum value of nickel in January is 6%, whereas the graph shows it at 6%, but later claims that copper dropped to -3% in the middle of the year, which misrepresents the actual trends shown for copper and nickel. The overview is very weak, stating only that the data presents information about electrical materials. While some main features are mentioned, the lack of accurate data reporting and the failure to provide a clear, comprehensive overview prevent this response from achieving a higher band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The text is organized into brief paragraphs, starting with an introduction followed by a body divided somewhat haphazardly into separate discussion sections. However, the logical progression is severely disrupted by confusing transitions, vague referencing (such as 'and after in the mid june and july prices changes totally fell'), and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are used in a mechanical and inaccurate manner, making it difficult to follow the relationships between ideas and data points. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs lacks logical flow and coherence.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently reusing terms like 'prices', 'changes', 'average', and 'monthly'. There are numerous lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'proportion of average monthly prices changes', 'electrical materials' (referring to industrial metals), and 'a see little bit dumb' (intended to mean a dip or drop). Spelling errors are also present, including 'nickle' (instead of nickel) and 'febraury' (instead of February). The range of vocabulary is limited and strained, occasionally causing confusion for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences with frequent structural errors. There are significant issues with subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, as seen in 'The graph illustrate' and 'Copper starting percentages price is 2%'. Many sentences are grammatically incomplete or poorly formed, such as 'Compare to the zinc january prices is 2%'. Punctuation is also sparse and inaccurate. Frequent grammatical errors cause considerable difficulty for the reader and obscure the intended meaning.
