Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The given line graph shows the average monthly change in the prices of three metals during 2014.
Overall the line graph demonstrate the change in the prices of three metals like copper, nickel and zinc. We can see the flucuation of the price of the metals during different month junuary from december.
In line graph nickel dramitacally decreased in rate 6% to reach at minimum point -3% in the month of june and slightly increace and remain constant in june from september at the -1%. While, copper gradually decreased in rate 2% and drop and slightly increase and remain constant in the month of july to september.
Moreover, zinc increased in rate 1% to 3% by the month of january to february and dramatically fallen and remain constant by the month july to september month.
Thus the line graph illustrate the average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc. Thus the line graph shows all the three metals are remain constant at the month july to september.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The candidate addresses the main parts of the task by reporting information on all three metals and attempting some comparisons and overall trends. However, the selection of data is somewhat erratic and contains notable inaccuracies regarding the visual data. For instance, nickel did not start at 6% and drop to -3% in June as the starting point in January was 6% but the trajectory included various fluctuations. Furthermore, the claim that all three metals remained constant from July to September is inaccurate for copper and nickel, which continued to show changes. The overview is repetitive and lacks precision. Consequently, this performance aligns closely with Band 5, as the response addresses the task partially and contains limited, under-developed, and occasionally inaccurate ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response exhibits some organization, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. The essay is divided into short paragraphs, but sentences often feel disjointed due to repetitive phrasing, such as starting multiple sentences or clauses with 'Thus the line graph'. Cohesive devices are basic and sometimes misused or repetitive (e.g., 'While', 'Moreover', 'Thus'). Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the vague transition 'from december' or confusing chronological sequencing ('junuary from december'). While paragraphing is attempted, the overall logical flow and progression are weak, leading to a score of 5.0 under the Coherence and Cohesion criteria.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, with several spelling errors ('flucuation', 'junuary', 'dramitacally', 'increace', 'fallen'). The candidate attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'dramitacally' and 'gradually', but the spelling and word forms are often inaccurate. Frequent reliance on basic verbs and descriptive terms (e.g., 'rate', 'point', 'change') restricts the range of expression. Although the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the general topic of metal prices, the noticeable errors and restricted range place this response firmly at Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Most sentences are simple or attempt complex structures that are faulty (e.g., 'nickel dramitacally decreased in rate 6% to reach at minimum point -3%... and slightly increace and remain constant...'). There are frequent errors in tense consistency, prepositions ('in rate', 'at the month'), and subject-verb agreement ('all the three metals are remain constant'). These errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and impede clear communication at times. The grammatical control is inconsistent, which is characteristic of Band 4.5 to 5.0; however, granting the benefit of the doubt for basic sentence construction, a band score of 5.0 is appropriate.
