Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to address the task by describing the trends for copper, nickel, and zinc in 2014. An overview is attempted, stating that nickel had the highest percentage change and zinc the lowest, though this is somewhat inaccurate as overall fluctuations varied. The key features of the graph are reported, such as nickel starting at 6% in January and dropping to -3% in June, and copper experiencing fluctuations around 0%. However, the data points contain inaccuracies and are poorly integrated. For instance, the statement that zinc rose to 2% in December is correct, but the overall summarization lacks a clear, cohesive selection of trends. The response meets the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, but the lack of precise data handling and a well-developed overview limits the score to Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organized into paragraphs, attempting an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing individual metals. However, the logical progression is weak due to poor linking and abrupt transitions between sentences. Cohesive devices are either missing or misused, such as 'An evidence of the image', which is grammatically incorrect and awkward. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical repetition of phrases like 'by the month of June' or 'by the December month' disrupts the flow of the text. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion fails to create a smooth, readable progression of ideas, resulting in a Band 5.0 for this criterion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, heavily relying on simple terms such as 'highest percentage', 'change', and 'slowly'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'nickel element' instead of just 'nickel', and 'flucations' (spelling error for fluctuations). The student attempts some less common vocabulary like 'gradually decreases' and 'declined', but inaccuracies in collocation and word formation persist (e.g., 'got the least percentage'). These errors do not completely obscure meaning, but they restrict the range of vocabulary, placing the response firmly at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical structure of the response is characterized by frequent errors, run-on sentences, and poor punctuation. For example, the opening sentence 'The graph displays the prices of three metals copper, nickel, zinc average monthly change in price 2014' lacks essential prepositions and conjunctions. There are issues with verb tense consistency, missing articles, and awkward phrasing such as 'upto to 1%'. Complex sentence structures are attempted, but they are frequently faulty and contain grammatical errors that cause difficulty for the reader. The frequency and nature of these errors warrant a Band 5.0.
