Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the main features of the graph regarding the monthly percentage changes in prices for copper, nickel, and zinc in 2014. However, the student struggles significantly with the data. There are numerous inaccuracies and misreadings of the chart values and trends. For instance, the student states that nickel 'drastically decreased in the month of march at 1' and that it remained constant until August, which contradicts the graph where nickel fluctuated downwards through several months. Furthermore, the response lacks a clear overall trend or overview paragraph, which is essential for Academic Task 1. The reporting is a disjointed chronological narration of individual data points rather than a synthesised summary. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, earning a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into paragraphs that separate the different metals, which provides some basic structure. However, there is a lack of overall progression, and the logical organisation is weak, largely due to the absence of an overview. The student attempts to use cohesive devices and transition phrases such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', 'Heading up to next', and 'Comming on to nickel', but these are often unnatural, clunky, or misapplied in an academic context. Referencing and referencing pronouns are sometimes confusing, and the mechanical repetition of transitional phrases disrupts the flow of the text. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within paragraphs is faulty. This performance aligns with Band 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling and word-choice errors. Words like 'illustrate' are used with incorrect grammatical agreement ('The graph below illustrate'), and common terms are misspelled repeatedly (e.g., 'january' as 'january', 'febuary' instead of 'february', 'ramins' instead of 'remains', 'throughtout', 'Comming', 'falled'). The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to trends, such as 'fluctuate', 'decreasing', 'constant', 'rapidly', and 'drastically', but these are often combined with inappropriate prepositions or used inaccurately to describe percentage changes (e.g., 'prices was pacing at 2'). The lexical range is limited and frequently strains the reader, corresponding to a Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on positive descriptors for minimally adequate task completion vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The text displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic compound structures linked with coordinating conjunctions. Attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty or ungrammatical, such as 'prices was pacing at 2' (subject-verb agreement and tense errors) and 'it was started decreasing'. There are persistent errors in verb tenses, capitalization, and punctuation throughout the response. For example, 'it ramins constant', 'it raises rapidly', and 'zinc has raised up'. These numerous grammatical errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and restrict the control of grammar to a Band 4.0 level.
