Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to cover the main trends shown in the graph, noting the dramatic fall in nickel prices and the more stable fluctuations of copper and zinc. However, the student misinterprets the data significantly in places. For instance, the graph displays percentage changes rather than absolute prices or costs, stating the monthly change compared with the previous month. The student writes that 'prices of the Nickel were quiet high' in January and that zinc 'prices were high initially', which confuses the rate of change with absolute price levels. Furthermore, some timeline details are inaccurate when compared to the visual reference. Because of these misinterpretations regarding what the vertical axis represents, the task achievement is limited.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The essay is divided into an introduction and three body paragraphs, attempting an overall structure. However, paragraphing and cohesion are poorly managed. There is no clear overview paragraph at the beginning; instead, the second sentence of the first paragraph attempts this function awkwardly. Cohesive devices are weak, repetitive, and occasionally inaccurate ('On the other side', 'After that it is has shown', 'On the other hand'). Logical progression is hindered by run-on sentences and a lack of clear referencing between ideas, making the relationships between the trends difficult to follow in places.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is quite basic and repetitive, with frequent misuses of terminology such as 'total monthly change in cost' instead of price change. Other lexical inaccuracies include 'quiet high' (quite high), 'heigher rated' (higher rates), and 'drastically during mid of the year'. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary ('fluctuating', 'gradually'), the range is limited, and spelling or word-choice errors are noticeable throughout, occasionally causing slight difficulty for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The student displays a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple or poorly linked compound sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with verb tenses and auxiliary verbs (e.g., 'Nickel prices has been fallen', 'it is has shown constant rates', 'Zinc started prices were high'). Punctuation is also problematic, with missing commas after introductory phrases and run-on clauses (e.g., 'until mid of the year which is june after that it is has shown'). These persistent errors restrict the band score.
