Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the main features of the line graph regarding the average monthly price changes of copper, nickel, and zinc in 2014. While it does cover parts of the data, there are notable inaccuracies and misinterpretations. For instance, the student states that nickel decreased to -5 in October (the actual graph shows -2), and misreads several values for copper and zinc, using phrasing like '2 and 1 percent significantly' and awkward sequencing. An overview is attempted in the second sentence, but it is factually flawed ('prices of all metals was high as compared with the other months'). Because of these data misreadings and a lack of a clear, accurate overall trend summary, the task is only partially addressed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is organised into four paragraphs, following a rudimentary structure of an introduction, overview, and body details. However, logical progression is frequently disrupted by confusing transitions such as 'Fistly' and 'Secondly', and awkward referencing. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately (e.g., overusing 'however'). Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information lacks cohesion, as details about different metals are mixed within the same sentences without clear relational links, making the overall flow halting for the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, relying heavily on words like 'price', 'change', 'metals', 'increased', and 'decreased'. There are noticeable errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'least price change' instead of 'smallest fluctuation' or 'lowest change', and the misuse of 'significantly' in '2 and 1 percent significantly'. Spelling errors also occur (e.g., 'january', 'Fistly', 'remined'). While the language is minimally adequate to convey basic concepts, the limited range and lexical inaccuracies restrict the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures often contain errors. Examples of grammatical mistakes include subject-verb agreement issues ('prices of all metals was high') and awkward phrasing ('price change of zinc was increased and copper was decreased'). Punctuation is generally basic, and capitalization errors are present ('january', 'fistly'). Frequent errors in grammar and structure can cause some difficulty for the reader, placing this response solidly in the band 5 range.
