The graph below shows the average monthly change in the prices of three metals during 2014.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The illustration gives information about the % change in price compared with previous month. Overall, Nickle is the only metal which shows its highest cost at the start and also fall to its lowest worth in july.

It is quite evident from the graph the nickle metal is only one which have highest price at the start and it is 6%. Then with the passage of time price decrease dramatically and even reached at its lowest category in july. After this, they start increasing and remain constant for three month then fall in october and significantally rise and at the end become constant.

Furthermore, metal like Zinc value go up then drop as time passes. It show their lowest cost in july month. At the end their worth climb and reached 2%. The metal like Copper in start decreas and then rise. At last month prices of all three metals almost equal to each other

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response attempts to cover the main trends for all three metals, noting that nickel starts the highest and drops significantly, zinc rises and falls, and copper decreases initially before rising. However, the overview is somewhat confused, focusing overly on specific monthly fluctuations rather than broad comparative trends. The summary of data is also imprecise in places, such as misrepresenting copper's initial trajectory or the exact nature of the month-to-month changes. While all three metals are mentioned, the lack of a clear, coherent overall summary prevents the response from achieving a higher band. It satisfies the basic requirements of Task Achievement at a Band 5.5 level by reporting relevant data points, but the lack of precise trend synthesis limits its effectiveness.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has severe structural limitations. It consists of a single large block of text or poorly divided paragraphs that lack a clear logical progression. Cohesive devices are weak and repetitive, relying on basic connectors like 'Then', 'After this', and 'Furthermore', which creates a mechanical feel. Referencing is also confusing at times, such as the pronoun shift in 'After this, they start increasing and remain constant for three month then fall in october'. The progression of ideas lacks cohesion, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparisons between the three metals smoothly. This aligns closely with the Band 5 descriptors for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive ('cost', 'worth', 'price', 'increase', 'decrease'). There are several spelling errors, most notably 'Nickle' for nickel and 'significantally' for significantly, along with word choice errors such as 'lowest category' instead of 'lowest point'. While the student attempts some descriptive vocabulary ('dramatically', 'constant'), the lack of precision and frequent lexical slips restrict the score. The range of vocabulary is barely adequate to describe the chart's general trends, fitting the Band 5 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic compound structures. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the nickle metal is only one which have', 'metal like Zinc value go up', 'metal like Copper in start decreas') and missing articles ('in start', 'in july'). Punctuation is also sparse and inconsistent. Because complex sentences are either missing or frequently faulty, and errors are frequent enough to cause occasional distraction for the reader, a Band 5.0 is appropriate.
