Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by describing the overall trends and some specific figures for copper, nickel, and zinc in 2014. However, the response suffers from several inaccuracies and omissions in data reporting. For instance, the student states that the price of zinc was 'stood at 1 percent' in January and remained increased by 2% in February, whereas the chart shows zinc at 1% in January and 3% in February. Furthermore, the overview paragraph is weak, vague, and grammatically disrupted, failing to adequately summarise the main trends or overall patterns of the three metals. The selection of data lacks full development, resulting in a Band 5 performance for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is organized into paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. However, logical progression is frequently hindered by awkward phrasing and poor mechanical cohesion. Transition phrases such as 'Looking from overall perspective', 'At the first glace', and 'Probing further' are either unnatural or incorrectly used. Additionally, referencing and pronoun use are sometimes unclear, and the overall arrangement lacks a smooth, cohesive flow, placing it squarely in the Band 5 category.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is basic and repetitive, with frequent word choice and collocation errors (e.g., 'different three type of metals', 'stood at -1 percent in june', 'rose up at 2 %', 'it prices showed some variations'). Attempts to use less common vocabulary are unsuccessful due to inaccuracies. Spelling and word formation errors, such as 'glaice' (glance) and 'Afterthat', further restrict the score. The lexical range is minimally adequate for the task, but errors occasionally impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The student demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex structures that are faulty. There are numerous grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense confusion, missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions, and subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'the price of zinc was stood at', 'it remained increased by', 'it prices showed'). These persistent errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and mean that error-free sentences are rare.
