Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to summarise the main features of the graph showing average monthly price changes for three metals in 2014. However, the interpretation of the data contains several factual inaccuracies and misreadings of the graph. For instance, the text claims that nickel fluctuated from 6 to 1 from January to March, whereas the chart shows nickel dropping from 6 in January to 4 in February and 1 in March. Furthermore, the overall overview is confusing and inaccurate, stating that nickel had a different direction as it 'dropped dramatically by the period' and that the three metals reached the same points at the end of the year, which is not supported by the data. The response addresses the task only partially due to these significant data misinterpretations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response is organised into multiple paragraphs, but the logical flow and progression are weak. The introduction is followed by an overall statement that lacks clarity, and the body paragraphs fail to structure the comparisons effectively. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or incorrectly, such as 'therefore nickel has different direction', 'Looking in depth', and repeated misuse of 'Therefore' and 'Consequently'. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is frequently faulty, making the relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Reference words are sometimes ambiguous.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive, with frequent awkward collocations and word choice errors. Examples include 'drop dramatically by the period', 'meet the point again', 'remain stable till may', and 'reaches and contain relation'. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'fluctuated dramatically' and 'significantly', inaccurate usage and incorrect forms restrict the precision of the response. Spelling is mostly accurate, but lexical control is insufficient for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in verb tense, preposition use, and sentence structure, such as missing subjects or verbs (e.g., 'then again significantly to lowest at -3 in june'). Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on clauses and missing commas that obscure the meaning. While some simple sentences are clear, errors occur frequently throughout the text and occasionally cause difficulty for the reader.
