Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to summarise the overall trends and mentions all three metals, the information provided is somewhat fragmented and lacks a fully developed overview. The summary of trends contains noticeable inaccuracies in reading the data from the graph; for instance, the writer states that Nickel experienced a 6% change in 'july' (referring to January) and misinterprets several other monthly movements. Furthermore, the selection of features is limited, and the explanation lacks precision in comparing the metals effectively. To move to a higher band, the response must accurately report key data points from the chart and provide a clearer, more coherent overview of the main features without misinterpreting the values.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some basic organisation in the response, but it lacks a clear overall progression. The essay is divided into paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overview, followed by body paragraphs for the metals. However, cohesive devices are often mechanical, repetitive, or inaccurate, such as 'To begin with', 'Furthermore', and 'Secondly', which do not always connect ideas smoothly. Additionally, referencing is occasionally unclear, and the mechanical sequencing makes the flow jerky. To improve coherence and achieve a higher band, the student should ensure a logical flow of ideas from sentence to sentence, use a wider and more natural range of cohesive links, and group information about the metals in a more structured and comparable way rather than listing them disjointedly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'fluctuations', 'substantially', and 'dramatical' (dramatic), but these attempts are often marred by errors in word choice, form, and spelling. For instance, words like 'montly' (monthly), 'atlerations' (alterations), 'Nickle' (nickel), 'fuctutations' (fluctuations), 'climped' (climbed), and 'contant' (constant) demonstrate persistent spelling issues. Furthermore, collocation and lexical control are weak throughout the text. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to expand their range of vocabulary, improve spelling accuracy, and use precise terminologies related to data trends, such as 'increase', 'decrease', or 'fluctuate', with correct word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside poorly constructed complex attempts. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including issues with subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and missing articles or prepositions. Examples include 'Nickle face 6 % changes' (tense/agreement error), 'it,s figure was' (incorrect apostrophe usage for possessive 'its'), 'it continue to decrease' (tense error), and 'finihed at 2% in last month which was also highest for anyone in that month' (clunky structure and grammatical inaccuracy). These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student must exercise better control over basic grammar, ensure accurate verb tenses when describing past data, and eliminate punctuation errors such as stray full stops and misuse of apostrophes.
