Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to address the prompt by summarising the line graph depicting price changes for three metals, but it only does so partially. While some main features are mentioned, such as initial and final percentages for copper, nickel, and zinc, the overview is confused and inaccurate, stating that nickel had the highest change while also claiming it had the lowest price change. The reporting of data is also imprecise and lacks a clear, overarching summary of trends across the whole year. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to present a clearer and more accurate overview of the main trends without contradictory statements, and select and compare key features more effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation in the response, with a basic introduction, body sentences for individual metals, and an attempt at an overview paragraph, although it is placed awkwardly second. However, progression is lacking because the ideas jump between metals and months without a clear logical flow. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and occasionally inaccurate, such as using 'The second metal' and 'The last metal' mechanically, with frequent missing punctuation and run-on sentences that make it difficult to follow the relationships between data points. To improve, the writer should use clearer paragraphing and a wider, more accurate range of cohesive links to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is very limited and basic, featuring frequent repetition of words like 'price', 'percentage', 'month', and 'low'. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'remind stable price', 'price low', and 'price rose up', which cause some difficulty for the reader in understanding the precise meaning of the data. Spelling and word choice are basic throughout. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of functional vocabulary related to data trends and fluctuations, such as verbs and nouns like 'fluctuate', 'decline', 'surge', and 'stability', while using them with correct collocations and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The grammatical structures used are very limited, relying heavily on simple clauses strung together with commas or missing punctuation entirely. There are frequent grammatical errors, including missing articles ('in janurary month'), incorrect prepositions ('price compared previous month'), and tense/verb form confusion ('price low nearly -1 percentage'). Attempts at complex sentences are generally faulty or absent. These frequent errors cause strain and confusion for the reader. To improve, the writer must focus on basic sentence boundaries, punctuation, correct prepositions in data reporting, and accurate verb structures when describing numerical changes.
