Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.5

The response only partially addresses the task requirements due to a significant under-length issue, containing only 94 words against the 150-word minimum. While it attempts to report some main features of the line graph, such as nickel starting high and dropping sharply in June, the content is severely restricted in scope and fails to provide a comprehensive summary or make adequate comparisons across all three metals. Furthermore, some of the data reported is inaccurate or misinterpreted, such as stating nickel reached around 60% instead of 6% and claiming a 30% drop instead of a 3% drop. To reach higher bands, the writer must meet the word count requirement, cover all categories fully, and ensure data is read accurately from the visual prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

Information and ideas are not arranged in a fully coherent manner. The response lacks proper paragraphing, being presented as a disjointed set of short sentences and fragments. Although there are some basic linking devices and attempts to structure the response with an introductory overview and subsequent details, the progression of ideas is frequently disrupted. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the mechanical repetition of terms like 'the price of... metal' impedes smooth reading. To improve, the writer needs to group related information into clear paragraphs and use a wider variety of cohesive devices logically to connect trends and comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, demonstrating only a minimally adequate range for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation, such as 'significant changes' instead of fluctuations, 'nickel metal' instead of simply nickel, and 'slightly changes' instead of slight changes. Additionally, there are spelling and typographical errors, including 'qin', 'dratically', and 'stabled'. These errors can cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the writer should incorporate a broader range of less common lexical items and precise vocabulary to describe statistical trends without relying on basic or incorrect terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences with frequent grammatical errors. There are frequent issues with prepositions and tense usage, such as 'in the month of january to june' and 'rose in july and remained stabled'. Punctuation and capitalization are also problematic, with random capital letters like 'IN' and missing punctuation between independent clauses leading to run-on structures like 'months. and then'. These frequent errors frequently distract the reader. To improve, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, ensure correct verb forms and prepositions, and incorporate error-free complex sentences.
