Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially and falls short of the word count requirement by being one word under the 150-word minimum. While the student attempts to provide an overview and describe features of the chart, the selection of data is limited and contains inaccurate reporting. For instance, the statement that copper 'rmain same in middle months' misrepresents the data, and key trends are underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, the writer must ensure the response meets the minimum word length, presents a fully developed overview, and accurately reports the main trends and figures without generalising incorrectly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation with basic paragraphing, but the response lacks clear overall progression. The writing feels disjointed due to mechanical and inadequate cohesive devices, such as abrupt transitions between sentences and repetitive phrasing ('every month'). Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow the logical development of ideas. To improve, the student needs to use a wider range of cohesive devices more accurately and structure paragraphs so that ideas flow logically from an overview into detailed body paragraphs.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'fluctuation' and 'recession', but this leads to noticeable errors in word choice and form, including spelling mistakes like 'fluckuations', 'nickle', and 'Zink'. Additionally, phrases like 'having more fluctuation data' and 'face rapid decrease' are unnatural. To achieve a higher score, the student should expand their range of vocabulary, pay closer attention to spelling and word forms, and ensure collocations are appropriate for reporting statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, and attempts at complex structures are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('all three metal percentage decreases', 'Nickel having... it was peak'), incorrect verb tenses ('it was peak in first month which slightly go down'), and missing articles or prepositions. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer must incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence forms with better control over verb tenses and agreement.
