Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to summarise the overall trends and mentions all three metals, the information provided is limited, and some data points are inaccurate or poorly communicated. For instance, the description of nickel starting at 6% in January and dropping to 1% is present, but the details that follow lack clarity and precision. The overview is repetitive, essentially restating the prompt without synthesising the main trends effectively. Ideas remain under-developed, and the selection of key features is superficial, which prevents the report from achieving a higher level of coverage and analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some organisation in the response, but it lacks clear overall progression. The introduction is followed by body paragraphs that attempt to group information, but the lack of cohesive devices makes the flow mechanical and confusing. Transitions between sentences and ideas are abrupt, such as jumping from nickel to zinc without clear signal words. Paragraphing is also inadequate, as the body of the report is clumped into dense blocks that do not effectively separate the data for the different metals. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult to follow which metal or time frame is being discussed.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary range is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'dramatically' and 'gradually', but these are often accompanied by spelling errors, such as 'dramitacally', 'fluction', and 'decemper'. Word choice and collocations are frequently awkward, as seen in phrases like 'fluction of rate' and 'at the pont 1.5%'. These noticeable errors and misspellings cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect an inadequate control of lexical features.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex clauses that are grammatically faulty. There are frequent errors in verb tenses, prepositions, and articles throughout the text, such as 'nickel dramitacally decreased in rate 6% to 1%', 'remain constant in april', and 'copper start to fall'. Punctuation is also weak, with missing capitalisation and commas. These frequent errors cause strain and difficulty for the reader, keeping the grammatical accuracy at a restricted level.
