IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the average monthly change in the prices of three metals during 2014.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The line graph illustrates monthly average changes in the prices of three differnet metals during 2014. Overall, I see data is more toward the down side instead of upward. Nickel just take a large dip from 6 to 1 in just two months, whereas zinc rose from 1 to 3 but after a month it also moves downward.
Copper also moved toward the downside and keep falling our the months for around 5 months but its rose little bit and remain constant for next two months. Whereas, Zinc and nickel recover little but in the last they surged and remain contant in the last month. Copper prices changed alot and the demand for the zinc and nickel decreased our the months but in the last two months their demand and price also rises.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, containing only 133 words. Furthermore, the content addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to summarise the graph by mentioning some movements of the three metals, the information presented is largely inaccurate, vague, and lacks a clear overview. For instance, statements such as 'Nickel just take a large dip from 6 to 1 in just two months' misinterpret the data trends, and descriptions of prices and demand are confused throughout. To reach a higher level, the response must meet the word count requirement, present a clearer overview of the main trends without bringing in external assumptions about 'demand', and report the data accurately with adequate support.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text demonstrates some organisation, but there is no clear overall progression of ideas. The response is presented as a single dense block or very brief paragraph structure, which lacks sufficient paragraphing. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as repetitive transitions like 'whereas' and vague referencing pronouns like 'it' and 'their', making it difficult to follow which metal is being discussed. To improve, the student should structure the response with clear paragraphs, use cohesive devices more accurately to link ideas logically, and ensure referencing is unambiguous.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. There are several spelling errors, such as 'differnet' instead of different and 'alot' instead of a lot, alongside awkward lexical choices like 'take a large dip' and 'moves downward'. The student attempts some descriptive vocabulary related to trends, but noticeable errors in word choice and form occur throughout. To achieve a higher score, the student needs to expand their range of vocabulary, use more precise academic collocations for describing data trends, and pay closer attention to spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are frequent grammatical errors, including tense inconsistencies such as 'Nickel just take' and 'prices changed alot and the demand... decreased', as well as prepositional and article errors like 'our the months' instead of 'over the months'. These frequent errors can cause some difficulty for the reader and impede smooth communication. To improve, the student must demonstrate better control over verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions while attempting a wider variety of accurate complex sentence forms.
