Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response makes an attempt to describe the provided line chart, but it addresses the task only partially. While the student mentions all three metals (copper, nickel, and zinc) and identifies some general movements, the information reported is frequently inaccurate or contradictory. For example, the student states that the metal zinc fell sharply from January to June, whereas the chart actually shows zinc rising steadily from January to May before dropping in June. Furthermore, the overall summary in the conclusion is repetitive and does not clearly synthesise the main trends shown in the visual data. To reach a higher level, the student must accurately select and report the key features of the data without misinterpreting the direction of the trends.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response includes some basic organisational structure, such as an introduction and conclusion, but lacks clear overall progression. The information within the body paragraphs is jumbled, and data for the same metal is discussed in multiple disconnected places (for instance, zinc is discussed in both body paragraphs and the conclusion). Additionally, cohesive devices are used very mechanically or are inaccurate, such as using 'To start with', 'Morever', and 'To conclude' without proper logical links between sentences. Referencing is also confusing, as seen when the student switches back and forth between metals without clear signposting. To improve, the student needs to group information logically by trends or by metal and use cohesive devices more naturally to guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, which is characteristic of the lower bands. The student relies on basic terms and attempts some less common vocabulary, but this frequently results in word choice, word form, and spelling errors. Examples of these errors include 'oscilliated', 'Coper', 'flactuated', 'Febuary', and 'Nickle'. Furthermore, phrases like 'dived down' and 'skyrocketed' are attempted, but the overall lexical control is weak and noticeable errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, the student should expand their range of vocabulary related to data trends and ensure accurate spelling and word formation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammatical range is quite limited, relying mostly on simple sentences alongside poorly controlled attempts at complex structures. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including tense usage, active/passive voice confusion, and missing articles. Examples include 'the metal zinc had fall sharply', 'there had changed the trend', and 'the price of metal Zinc was least in the January month'. These frequent errors can cause difficulty for the reader and disrupt the flow of the response. To progress, the student needs to improve their control over basic verb tenses and sentence structures, ensuring that simple and complex forms are constructed accurately.
