Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count of 150 words, stopping abruptly at only 73 words. Consequently, the task is addressed only partially. While the introduction adequately paraphrases the prompt, the overview attempts to summarise trends (such as 'the trend of rising on the price of zinc') but is incomplete and contains inaccurate reporting of the visual data. The response breaks off mid-sentence in the third paragraph ('according to the line graph, in the january month of 2014 the'), meaning no body paragraphs are completed and key comparisons between the three metals are omitted.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response shows some basic organisation, beginning with an introductory sentence and attempting an overall statement. However, there is no clear overall progression or logical development because the text cuts off prematurely in the second body paragraph. Cohesive devices are minimal and basic, such as 'Overall' and 'According to the line graph', and paragraphing is disrupted by the incomplete nature of the response. Referencing is attempted, but the failure to complete the task prevents any sustained logical structure.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, though it is minimally adequate for the few sentences produced. There are notable lexical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'trend of rising on the price' and 'significantly fell', where word choices and prepositions are imprecise. While basic terms like 'average monthly change' and 'costs of three metals' are understood, attempts at less common vocabulary reveal inaccuracies that indicate a limited lexical range suitable for this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control is weak. There are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the trend of rising on the price of zinc was slightly rose despite some fluctuated where as the cost of nickel metal was significantly fell', which demonstrates confusion over verb forms, passive/active voice, and subordinate clause structures. Punctuation around parentheses is also awkward ('metals( copper, nickel and zinc )'). These errors cause some difficulty for the reader.
