Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially. While the candidate attempts to summarize the graph showing the average monthly change in prices for copper, nickel, and zinc in 2014, the information reported is often inaccurate or poorly selected. For example, the overview contains confusing and vague statements such as 'while nickle price recored the higest over the year. Copper and zinc record the lowest sharein the period.' Furthermore, the data details frequently misinterpret the graph, such as stating that 'at the end of the period nickel sale reach 1%' when the percentage change was positive or misreading specific values. Key trends are underdeveloped, and the presentation of data lacks precision, leaving the reader with an unclear understanding of the overall visual information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some basic organization with an introductory paragraph, an overview, and body paragraphs, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion is often inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or incorrectly, such as the abrupt transitions using 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', and 'similiarly'. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, and punctuation issues further disrupt the logical flow between sentences. To move to a higher band, the writer needs to ensure that ideas are logically sequenced with smoother transitions and that referencing between sentences is robustly maintained.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The writer relies heavily on basic terminology and makes noticeable errors in word choice, such as repeatedly using the word 'share' instead of 'price' or 'percentage change', and referring to metal prices as 'nickel sale'. There are also frequent spelling errors throughout the text, including 'illustrate' (instead of illustrates), 'nickle', 'recored', 'higest', 'eiyher', 'flucatuate', 'similiarly', and 'continuous'. These lexical inadequacies and spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, while attempts at more complex structures are often faulty. There are frequent errors in verb forms, tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles throughout the text. Examples include 'The line graph illustrate' (missing third-person 's' and incorrect article use), 'nickel price recored higest which is 6%' (missing auxiliary verbs and articles), and 'zinc followed an opposite pattern, in january count 1%' (missing subject and prepositional errors). These frequent errors can cause difficulty and strain for the reader, placing the grammar firmly in the current band.
