Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response attempts to address the prompt by describing the line graph showing the average monthly change in metal prices during 2014. However, the interpretation of the data contains several inaccuracies and confusion regarding the axes, as the student states that the y-axis represents months and describes the data points with a lack of clarity. While some main features are mentioned, such as nickel starting at 6% and dropping to -3%, the ideas are limited and under-developed, resulting in a partial and confused response to the visual data. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to correctly identify the axes and provide a clearer, more accurate summary of the overall trends and key comparisons without misinterpreting the visual information.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is some basic organisation in the response, using transition markers such as 'Firstly', 'Secondely', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is hindered by awkward transitions and confusing statements about the graph. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks clear structure, and cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or inaccurate, such as 'wise come to reach'. To improve, the writer should ensure that ideas follow a logical sequence with clearer referencing and more natural transitions that guide the reader smoothly through the data points.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is basic and limited, containing noticeable errors that cause some difficulty for the reader. There are issues with word choice, spelling, and word form, such as 'rice' instead of 'price', 'perivous' instead of 'previous', 'axix' instead of 'axis', 'frome' instead of 'from', 'downfall', and 'shightly' instead of 'slightly'. The range is minimally adequate for the task, but frequent lexical inaccuracies impede smooth reading. To progress, the student must expand their vocabulary related to data trends and pay closer attention to spelling, word forms, and precise collocations for describing graphs.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors in grammar, articles, and prepositions. Examples of errors include 'The line gives the information' instead of 'The line graph gives', 'in the start', 'the nickel started downfall', and 'nickel is prices is growing'. Attempts at more complex structures lead to frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'nickel from month five suddenly goes down wise come to reach to -3%'. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to improve grammatical control, reduce basic errors in verb forms and subject-verb agreement, and develop greater accuracy across a wider variety of sentence structures.
