IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The graph below shows the average monthly change in the prices of three metals during 2014.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The graph represents an average montly change in the rates of copper, nickel and zinc during 2014.

Nickel price was the highest in January. Its graph showed a downward trend uptill June. In June, Nickel was at its rock bottom. After that it gained a raise in its price in the next half of the year.

The most stable trend was observed in the rates of Copper while the most fluctuating graph was observed in the prices of Nickel. The ups and downs in graph of Zinc prices was in between the Cooper and the Nickel prices.

There is an interesting point that all the three metals were at thier lowest rates in June. While from July till September their rates remained constant. Zinc prices were the highest in Feburary.

Overall, change in price of Nickel was the most unpredictable. While change in price of Copper was the most stable during 2014.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify several relevant features, including nickel’s high starting point, copper’s relative stability, and the metals’ low point around June. However, some comparisons are inaccurate or too broad: copper and zinc reach their lowest values in June, but nickel reaches its minimum then only if “lowest rates” means its lowest monthly change; zinc’s lowest point is also in October. The claim that all three rates remained constant from July to September is not supported: copper is steady, but nickel and zinc change slightly across those months. Your overview that nickel fluctuated most and copper least is useful, though the account would be stronger with clearer, accurate comparisons across the year and a few key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a generally coherent arrangement: it introduces the graph, describes nickel, compares the metals’ stability, and ends with an overall summary. Paragraphing helps separate these points, and phrases such as “After that” and “Overall” guide the reader. However, the progression is sometimes repetitive: the final overview repeats the stability comparison already made in the second paragraph. The sentence beginning “There is an interesting point” also introduces a claim that is not fully accurate, which weakens the connection between the comparison and the data. Some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “While” to begin sentence fragments. Grouping the main trends into a clearer overview and two focused detail paragraphs would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for describing trends, including “downward trend,” “stable,” “fluctuating,” and “unpredictable,” so the reader can understand the main comparisons. There are also attempts at more descriptive phrasing, such as “rock bottom,” but this is informal for an academic report; “lowest point” would be more suitable. Several word-choice and spelling problems reduce precision, including “gained a raise,” “rates” where “monthly price changes” is clearer, and misspellings such as “montly,” “thier,” and “Feburary.” “Cooper” also appears where you mean “copper.” Aim for accurate, formal collocations and check spelling carefully; this would make your otherwise relevant vocabulary more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple statements and some more developed structures, and most of the intended meaning remains clear. However, some sentence patterns are incomplete or awkward. “While change in price of Copper was the most stable during 2014” is a dependent clause presented as a sentence; connect it to the preceding sentence or rewrite it as a complete statement. The same issue occurs with “While from July till September their rates remained constant.” Articles and number are also inconsistent in phrases such as “an average monthly change” and “the rates of Copper.” Work on complete clause structure, article use, and consistent sentence boundaries. Greater control of these forms would make the comparisons easier to follow.
