IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the average monthly change in the prices of three metals during 2014.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The linear diagram illustrates the alter changes in the cost of three metals monthly over the period of 2014. There are three particular items such as copper, nickel and zinc which explain the measure changes in price respectively. The images shown where nickel is downward from 6% to 1% at half year whereas both copper and zinc also fluctuated.
Firstly, the price changes in nickel in the middle of the year and at the end of December. It shows the amount of nickles drastically downwards and fluctuated upto 1%. If we look after june than there is constant of price from july to september and it is low about 1% . Later, it may rised but at end it constants which is about 1% change in price.
Secondly, the cost of zinc which increased 1%-3% from January to February. And it goes down in the middle of the year which is month of june. It is about -1% changes & constant july to september. later it slowly rised. Similarly, copper is slightly decreased 2% to 0 and stable respectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify all three metals and report some relevant movements, including nickel’s sharp fall and zinc’s rise early in the year. However, the response only partially summarises the graph: there is no clear overview of the main pattern, and several key comparisons are missing. For example, nickel begins at about 6%, falls to around -3% in June, then recovers to 1% by November; the account instead says it falls from 6% to 1% “at half year.” Copper’s movement is also misreported: it falls from 2% to about -0.5%, rather than simply declining to zero and remaining stable. Select the most important peaks, troughs and shared trends, and describe them accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a basic structure, with an opening followed by separate paragraphs for nickel and zinc, and it uses signposts such as “Firstly” and “Secondly.” These choices give the reader some sense of organisation. However, the progression is not consistently clear: copper is added briefly at the end, while the opening makes broad claims that are not then developed. Some links are awkward or unclear, such as “Similarly, copper is slightly decreased… and stable respectively,” where the relationship between the figures and the description is difficult to follow. Group the metals by meaningful trends or give each a complete, clearly ordered account, and use linking phrases to show time sequence and comparison more precisely.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-related vocabulary, including “fluctuated,” “increased,” “decreased,” and “constant,” so the reader can recognise that you are describing price movements. However, the range is limited and several word choices or forms are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning unclear. Examples include “alter changes,” “measure changes,” “the amount of nickles,” and “it may rised.” “Linear diagram” is also not the natural term for this visual; “line graph” is more appropriate. Aim for precise collocations such as “monthly percentage change,” “fell sharply,” “remained stable,” and “recovered,” while checking spelling and word forms. This would make the description clearer and more suitable for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, and the response is generally recognisable as a description of the graph. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently, particularly in verb forms, sentence construction and articles. For instance, “the price changes in nickel in the middle of the year” is a fragment, while “it may rised” has an incorrect verb form. In “If we look after june than there is constant of price,” the conditional structure and clause connection are faulty. There are also problems with tense and agreement in phrases such as “it slowly rised” and “it constants.” Practise complete sentences using consistent past-tense reporting verbs, and check articles and punctuation when joining clauses.
