Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given linegraph depicts average monthly change in the prices of three metals during 2014.

It can be seen that from the data there are three type of metals- copper, nickel and zinc. In this bar graph x axis described month while y axis described percentage change in price.

Furthermore, in the month of january copper and zinc prices are almost same but nickel prise was skyrocketed in the market which is 6 percentage. Moreover after few month in june nickel price was dropped around minus 3 percentage and at the same time copper and zinc prices was also dropped which is minus 1 percentage.

On the other hand, after june month the market is skyrocketed again in july nickel and zinc prices almost minus 1 percentage steady for three months but copper price increasing which is 1 percentage steady for the months. After then in the month of august three metlas prices were slightly dropped and then in november zinc price increased which is 2 percentage and also nickel and copper value was same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify all three metals and report several relevant movements, including nickel’s high January rise and its fall to about −3% in June. However, the response does not provide a clear overview of the year’s main pattern, and some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear. For example, copper and zinc were not almost the same in January (about 2% and 1%), and zinc reached about 2% in December, not November. The statement that all three metals dropped in August is also incorrect: copper was around 1%, while nickel and zinc were near −1% and −0.5%. Select the clearest overall trends and check each month and figure against the graph.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic sequence, moving from an introduction to early-year figures and then later months, and linking phrases such as “Furthermore” and “On the other hand” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, there is no distinct overview, and the progression is difficult to follow because several months are grouped imprecisely or described out of order. The final sentence, for instance, moves from August to November without clearly covering the intervening period or December. Some linking phrases do not express a clear contrast or sequence. Organise the report into an introduction, a concise overview, and two chronological detail paragraphs, using time markers that accurately guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “percentage change,” “prices,” and “increased,” so the reader can identify the subject and several movements. However, the range is limited and some choices are inaccurate or informal for an academic graph report. “Skyrocketed” exaggerates the changes, while “steady” is used where you mean that a value remained at a particular level. There are also noticeable spelling errors, such as “prise,” “metlas,” and “january,” and “bar graph” misidentifies the visual as a line graph. Use precise, neutral terms such as “rose,” “fell,” “remained stable,” and “fluctuated,” and check spelling and graph terminology.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a contrast introduced by “while” and a time clause beginning “after.” However, the range is limited, and errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction occur frequently enough to make some statements awkward. For example, “there are three type of metals” needs plural agreement, and “copper and zinc prices was also dropped” has problems with both agreement and verb form. The phrase “in the month of january” also needs an article and correct capitalization. Practise forming accurate past-tense comparisons, such as “prices fell,” and check subject–verb agreement and plural nouns before submitting.
