IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The graph below shows the average monthly change in the prices of three metals during 2014.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The graph depicts the percantage changes in price comapred with previous month in the montarily value of copper, nickel and zinc during the year 2014.
Nickel starts the year with a price change of 6%, much greater than the other two metals. As the year proceeds, it shows a gradual decline, reaching lowest price change relartive to previous month than other two metals, till the month of june and rising up from there. This is followed by constant period till september, followed by a brief decline but incling upward from there. Where as copper and zinc havec a relative start from 2% and 1% respectively. Zinc risies as copper declines both going in opposite directions till feburary and then a decline for both the metals. After six months they both remain constant till the month of October where zinc takes the lead and reaches the level of 2% and copper remains below it, somewhat comparable at the percentage of betweeem 1-2%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
You identify the three metals and report several relevant movements, including nickel’s high January figure, its sharp fall by June, and the later recovery of zinc and copper. However, the account is only partial and lacks a clear overview of the main pattern across the year. Some details are inaccurate or unclear: nickel reaches its lowest point in June, but the description of its subsequent movement is difficult to follow; copper and zinc do not both decline after February, since copper is broadly stable before falling slightly in May. The claim that zinc “takes the lead” in October is also misleading, as both metals are negative then. Select the most important turning points and compare them accurately.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has a basic sequence from nickel’s early movement to the comparison of copper and zinc, and linking phrases such as “As the year proceeds” and “followed by” show an attempt to connect events. However, the progression is difficult to track because several trends are packed into long sentences, and the paragraph does not clearly separate an overview from supporting details. Phrases such as “This is followed by constant period” and “Where as copper and zinc…” leave the reader unsure which period or trend is being referenced. Use a clear overview first, then organise the details into logical groups, such as nickel and the other two metals, with shorter sentences and more precise references.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “price change,” “gradual decline,” “rising,” and “constant,” so the reader can identify the general subject and direction of movement. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the trends hard to understand. For example, “reaching lowest price change relative to previous month than other two metals” is not a natural or clear way to describe a low point, while “relative start” and “takes the lead” are imprecise in this context. Spelling errors such as “percantage,” “montarily,” and “feburary” are also noticeable. Practise standard graph language such as “fell to,” “remained stable,” and “recovered.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to combine ideas using subordinate clauses and time expressions, as in “As the year proceeds” and “till the month of June,” but the sentence structures are often faulty or incomplete. In “This is followed by constant period,” an article is missing, and the sequence “reaching lowest price change … till the month of June and rising up from there” does not form a clear grammatical structure. The final sentence also joins several ideas without clear punctuation, making the relationships difficult to follow. There is some control of simple present-tense reporting, but complex attempts frequently contain errors that affect clarity. Build shorter sentences around accurate verbs, then add one comparison or time clause at a time.
