Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the three metals and mention several relevant movements, including nickel’s sharp fall in June and the rise in zinc toward the end of the year. However, the response only partially summarises the graph: it gives no clear overall picture of the metals’ contrasting patterns, and several claims are inaccurate or imprecise. Copper does not have its highest monthly change in January; its largest increase is in December. Nickel is highest in January, but its November and December figures are not stable with the preceding months, as they recover from negative changes to about 1%. Zinc is not simply “lower” in January; its change is positive but relatively small. Select the main peaks, troughs and shared late-year recovery, and report them accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic sequence: an introduction is followed by comments on nickel and zinc, then copper. This gives the reader some sense of the topic, but the progression is not consistently clear. The opening repeats “the graph given/below” and says the prices are changing every month without adding a useful overview. Linking words such as “Furthermore” and “Moreover” are repeated mechanically, while the metals are discussed in separate, loosely connected statements rather than grouped around meaningful comparisons. Paragraphing is also absent. A clearer structure would use a concise introduction, an overview of the main trends, and one or two paragraphs comparing the metals’ key movements.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “significant decline,” “slight decline,” “increased,” and “stable,” so the reader can understand the general subject. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise for a graph of monthly percentage changes. “Modifications” is not a natural description of price movements, and “average prices” suggests actual price levels rather than changes in price. “The price … is the highest” also confuses the level of a metal’s price with the largest monthly percentage change. The spelling “nikel” is incorrect, and repeated use of “prices” and “increased” reduces variety. Use precise terms such as “monthly change,” “rose,” “fell,” and “reached a peak.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

Most sentences communicate a basic idea, but the response relies heavily on simple sentence patterns and has frequent punctuation and sentence-boundary problems. For example, “As we can see in the graph given below,in the year 2014.The average prices…” is incorrectly divided, leaving a fragment after the full stop. Commas are repeatedly attached to the following word, and the opening phrase “The graph given, demonstrates” has an unnecessary comma. There are also inconsistent article and number patterns, as in “the prices of the copper” and “the prices of copper and nickel … are the highest.” Try combining related information in controlled complex sentences, while checking sentence boundaries, commas, articles and subject–verb agreement.
