Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given graph shows the average changing monthly of three metals during 2014.

Overall, the graph shows prices of nickel fell and its rise from 6% to -3% and its finall reach at 1% while copper prices started from 2% and get prices higher then nickel and in compare zinc its prices rised from proportion 1% and reached at peak 2% which was higher then others.

The nickel price proportion 6% was at its peak then fell at lowest proportion of overall gaph -3% and its started rising and rested at 1% while zinc started from the lowest price at the proportion 1% and took higher place in prices over others. The last copper prices started from 2% and was at its peak proportion at 3% and was going well as the graph was showing its also was in between 0% to -1% then its prices falls closer to others and standed at centre of the others.

The comparison between nickel and zinc was that nickel prices start from highest valvues while zinc prices start from lowest but result was different the zinc had high demand other then of both like nickel and copper.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the main extremes for nickel, noting its high starting point and fall to a low, and you mention that zinc rises towards the end. However, several details are inaccurate or unclear: copper does not peak at 3%—its highest monthly change is about 2% in January—and it does not simply become higher than nickel. Nickel falls to around -3% in June, then fluctuates before ending at 1%; zinc also falls below zero mid-year and finishes near 2%. The claim that zinc had “high demand” is not supported by a graph of price changes. To strengthen the response, give a clear overview of the shared mid-year decline and late recovery, then compare the metals using accurate key figures.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some organisation: it begins with an introduction, follows with an overview, and then gives further details. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the same points are repeated and comparisons are not clearly grouped. For example, nickel’s fall and recovery are described in both the overview and the next paragraph, while the final paragraph introduces a demand claim without connecting it to the chart. Linking phrases such as “while” and “then” are attempted, but references like “its” and “others” are often unclear. Organise the body by stages or by metal, and use explicit comparisons—for example, contrast nickel’s sharp fall with copper’s smaller changes.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “peak,” “lowest,” “prices,” and “proportion,” so the reader can recognise that you are describing a line graph. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning difficult to interpret. Phrases such as “average changing monthly,” “its finall reach,” “took higher place,” and “standed at centre” are not natural ways to describe the data. “Proportion” is also unsuitable for these percentage changes; use “percentage change” or “rate.” Aim for precise trend language such as “declined,” “recovered,” “fluctuated,” and “ended at,” and check spelling and word forms before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt longer sentences and use some linking structures, as in “while copper prices started…” and “then fell…,” but complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make parts of the response hard to follow. For example, “The nickel price proportion 6% was at its peak then fell at lowest proportion” lacks clear grammatical relationships, while “its started rising and rested at 1%” has an incorrect pronoun and awkward verb construction. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, including the long, loosely joined sentence beginning “The last copper prices…”. Build accuracy with shorter sentences first, then combine ideas using controlled clauses such as “Nickel fell to -3% in June before recovering to 1% by December.”
