Average monthly change in prices of copper, nickel and zinc (2014)

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The graph illustration propution monthly change in the prices of metals are copper, nickel and zinc present years 2014.

Overall, there are three elements Copper,Nickel and Zinc comparing the Price hike and decrease over the whole year. While looking at the chart for Nikel it has a good price hike in the month of January howevere the price gradullay fell from 6 to 1 in the chart coming closesr to the negative ranging of -3 . It did picked up the value but not equal to the month of January.

While we compare the Copper and Zinc they had there share of up and down in prices but not as extreme as Nickel. They where in the between raange of 3 to -1.

Coming closer to the year end all the three elements where in the same price range as we see they where between 1 to 2.

Concluding that thugh they staarted in a very diffrent price range in the starting of the year howevre by the yeaar end prices for all the three metals where closer to each other.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You identify the three metals and give a broad overview: nickel begins with the strongest rise, while all three finish in a similar positive range. These are relevant main features. However, some comparisons are imprecise or incomplete. Copper and zinc are described as ranging “between 3 to -1,” which does not capture copper’s narrower movement or zinc’s early peak, and the claim that all metals were “between 1 to 2” at year-end overlooks nickel’s approximately 1% change in both November and December. The account also gives little detail about the metals’ distinct mid-year falls and recoveries. To strengthen the response, report the key turning points and compare the series more precisely, while keeping the overview focused on the largest contrasts.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a recognisable overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, comparisons between the metals, and a concluding observation. Paragraphs generally group related information, and phrases such as “While we compare” and “Coming closer to the year end” help signal movement through the chart. However, the progression is somewhat repetitive: the final paragraph restates the idea that the metals end close together without adding a new comparison. Some references are also unclear, particularly “they” in the closing paragraph, which could refer to the metals or their prices. Use a more direct sequence—overview, nickel’s main changes, then copper and zinc—and connect each comparison explicitly to the relevant months.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “price hike,” “fell,” “negative,” and “up and down,” so the reader can follow the general trends. However, the range is limited and several choices are informal or imprecise for describing a graph: “good price hike,” “share of up and down,” and “same price range” do not clearly distinguish percentage changes from price levels. Spelling errors such as “propution,” “gradullay,” and “diffrent” are noticeable and sometimes slow reading. Aim for accurate trend language and collocations, such as “rose sharply,” “declined,” “fluctuated,” and “recovered,” and check spelling carefully. This would make the comparisons more precise and appropriately formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a contrast introduced by “While” and a time clause beginning “Coming closer to the year end.” However, control is inconsistent, and several sentences are incomplete or awkwardly formed. “The graph illustration propution monthly change…” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “It did picked up the value” uses an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “Concluding that…” is also a fragment rather than a complete conclusion. There are further problems with articles, agreement, and punctuation, as in “there are three elements Copper,Nickel and Zinc.” Build clearer complete sentences first, then use a few accurate complex structures to compare changes across months.
