Student answer (Band 7.0)

A growing number of people believe that asking questions related to personal hobbies or interests to interview candidate provide them background knowledge regarding their behaviour, work potential and thinking capacity. However, others argue that their past work experience and qualifications matter a lot instead of wasting time to get to know about their personal things. Therefore, I partially agree with the given statement, as hobbies, interest and marital status facilitate them to acquire information regarding their work potential and nature, whereas these details need to be confidential.

On the one hand, asking details about interests, hobbies and marital status of the interview person provide them knowledge regarding their behaviour, how much they are efficient to cope with critical conditions and their flexibility. For instance, hobbies showcase the innovative thinking capacity of individual and what they can contribute for the betterment of the company. Additionally, married status of employees display their working efficiency, as a number of workers unable to work overtime or convenient with hybrid work. While, unmarried employees will be willing to spend long working hours in office. Therefore, these sort of details support them to opt correct employee for the company.

On the other hand, private life should not to be share with other person for their safety and security concerns. Also, at workplace, professional skills, background education, previous training and past experience matters more rather than discuss their interests, hobbies or other things with interview candidate. Hence, their confidence, personality, good communication, cooperation, critical-thinking and problem solving skills play a pivotal role for their successful professional career and contribution in any organisation.

In conclusion, personal details helping employers to discover the behaviour, work capacity of the person. Whereas, previous work experience, qualification and educational workshops should be their first priority to ask questions to interview candidate.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the link between hobbies and innovation, or the concern for privacy. However, some arguments are slightly under-developed; for instance, the claim that marital status directly correlates with working efficiency is a broad generalization that could have been supported with more nuanced reasoning. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that all claims are fully explained with logical depth rather than just stated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two opposing views. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'While, unmarried employees...', which disrupts the flow. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the use of 'them' in the introduction, which lacks a clear antecedent. Overall, the progression of ideas is logical and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'innovative thinking capacity', 'professional skills', and 'confidential'. However, there are some issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'asking questions related to personal hobbies... to interview candidate' (should be 'candidates') and 'married status of employees display' (should be 'displays'). Some phrasing is repetitive, and the range of vocabulary is somewhat limited, preventing a higher score. Focusing on more precise collocations would improve the quality of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'hobbies... provide' vs 'hobbies... provides'), article usage (e.g., 'at workplace'), and prepositional phrases. There are also errors in verb forms, such as 'should not to be share' instead of 'should not be shared'. These errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher band. Increasing the variety of error-free complex sentences and proofreading for basic agreement errors would significantly improve the score.
