Student answer (Band 7.0)

Sometimes applicants asked for their personal information like their hobbies and interests and also about their relationship status either married or single. Few individuals believe that it may be useful and relevant, while others differ the notion. I firmly believe that it might be useful to some extent but employer should not rely on those factors only to hire employees. This essay will elaborate both the statements in detail further.

Discussing the former opinion, the supporters claim that personal information may be useful to understand candidate's interest better. This is because they can hire in the particular department and distribute the work accordingly. For example, applicants interested in art and communication might have good presentation skill. So that employers can hire them for presentation and art related task. Moreover, it is easy to spend extra hours on work for singles as compared to married ones. Therefore, few employers prefer to hire single individuals for late night shifts. Hence, the example vividly illustrates that some personal information can be useful.

On the other hand, a group of people disagree with the statement as work task has to be finished on time no matter employees are interested or not. In addition, candidates know about the job duties very well before they apply so they mentally prepare for everything which does not need to match the interest to complete their duties. Also many married employees have good management skills and they know how to manage work-life balance. Eventually they can be more efficient than singles. Thus, personal information would not be useful in such cases.

In conclusion, Although personal information like interests and relationship status might be helpful in hiring process to assign few tasks, owners should not consider only those factors for hiring as it can not be helpful all the times.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of work-life balance and departmental suitability. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding 'singles' working late shifts is a bit stereotypical and could have been supported with more nuanced reasoning. The position is consistent throughout, but the conclusion is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more depth and specific, logical examples rather than general assertions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Discussing the former opinion,' 'On the other hand,' and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'the statement' in the third paragraph is slightly vague). Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the flow of information is easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a solid band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at using less common vocabulary, such as 'notion' and 'vividly illustrates.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'differ the notion' (should be 'differ on the notion' or 'disagree with the notion') and 'work task' (should be 'work tasks' or 'job duties'). The range is sufficient for the task, but more precise and varied vocabulary would be needed to reach a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the hiring process') and subject-verb agreement ('employer should not rely', 'applicants asked'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'no matter employees are interested or not.' While these errors do not impede communication, they are persistent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on proofreading for basic articles, pluralization, and ensuring that complex sentences are constructed with greater accuracy.
