Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, having a long job interviews become a fashion. Some people believe that asking a questions regarding their leisure time and interests and personal information could be beneficial while others think that it is not relevant information. Today, in this essay, i will discuss both point of views and give my opinion.

Firstly, questioning like hobbies and interests can be advantageous as it helps employer to discover more about your personality then boss can offer you a role according to your choice of interest. This way it can be beneficial for both employer and employee.

Moreover,

If owner ask questions whether you are married or single this way he can identify if you good fit for that particular role or not, because some positions required 6 or 7 days availability and which can be challenging for married person. For example, at my work i posted a job on indeed for Front desk at dental office which opens 7 days/week, and we required at-least 6 per week availability. If the person is married then he or she can create trouble in future by saying that they need time off for their partner which is also reasonable. So, that is why I specifically posted that we are looking for single person.

On the other hand, some folks think that, these are irrelevant questions to ask in job interviews as if you hold a particular degree for that particular job then employer should not ask these types of questions as it only waste the time. Furthermore, asking about hobbies are not useful information to evaluate any person’s personality. Everyone has their own preferences, hobbies does not describe a person.

To conclude, In my opinion, it depends where you are applying for job as some jobs are required your interest for example Day care jobs, you need to have interest in infants then only you can tolerate kids. Overall, it relies on where you want to work.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, meeting the requirements of the prompt. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding marital status is supported by a personal example, which is good, but the discussion on hobbies is less developed and relies on generalisations. The conclusion is a bit abrupt and could have better synthesised the main points discussed. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with clear reasoning rather than just stating preferences.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' are used to link sections. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing within sentences is occasionally weak. For example, the sentence 'If owner ask questions...' lacks proper articles and cohesive flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express their ideas clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary like 'leisure time', 'beneficial', and 'irrelevant'. However, there are instances of imprecise word choice and minor errors, such as 'having a long job interviews' (should be 'long job interviews') and 'folks' (which is too informal for an IELTS essay). To improve, the student should focus on using more academic collocations and avoiding informal or colloquial language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('If owner ask', 'hobbies does not describe'), missing articles ('at dental office'), and tense inconsistencies. While these errors do not prevent communication, they are persistent throughout the text. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to focus on basic grammatical accuracy, particularly with articles, pluralisation, and verb forms, while also attempting more complex sentence structures with greater precision.
