Student answer (Band 6.5)

Now-a-days, many recruiters ask candidates to disclose personal information like their hobbies and area of interests, and also their marital status as well. Many individuals think that this information is required to know a person better where as others believe that this is irrelevant. In the following paragraphs, we will discuss both the perspectives and give our verdict.

First and foremost, hiring managers seek peronal information to know the overall picture of your current situation. For example, according to many employers a married person is more likely to stay in a company for a longer period of time as he has responsibility of a family and he or she prefers stability over rapid growth. Additionally, getting to know about a person's hobby or area of interests tells a lot of things about a person. Meaning, a person who's interested in watching news and keeping himself or herself up to date with global trends and geopolitics is likely to be a good journalist.

On the other hand, many employers believe that applicants shouldn't be judged by what they do in their spare time or based on their relationship status. For example, someone who likes to play soccer in his or her free time can be a good graphic designer as well. Also, your marital status doesn't define your loyalty or sincerity at work place. For instance, Mr. Ratan Tata (a famous indian business tycoon) who never got married was known for his loyalty and sincerity at TATA Group (a multinational indian firm).

To conclude, it can be said that knowing contender's hobbies and interests is helpful to get a glimpse of a perosn but a final decisonal should only be made based on individual's knowledge and intelligence.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both sides of the argument and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the discussion on marital status and professional stability. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding hobbies could be expanded further to explain why employers might find them useful beyond just 'knowing the person'. The conclusion is brief and could have better summarised the main points to reinforce the position. Overall, the response is well-structured and meets the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'First and foremost', 'Additionally', and 'On the other hand' are used effectively to link ideas. However, there is some minor repetition in phrasing, and the transition between the two sides of the argument could be smoother. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure supports the development of the argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task. You use some topic-specific terms like 'recruiters', 'marital status', and 'geopolitics'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'peronal' instead of 'personal', 'perosn' for 'person', and 'decisonal' for 'decision'. These errors are noticeable but do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you should aim for more precise vocabulary and ensure greater accuracy in spelling. The use of 'business tycoon' is a good example of a more sophisticated lexical choice.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'Now-a-days' (should be 'Nowadays'), 'area of interests' (should be 'areas of interest'), and 'at work place' (should be 'in the workplace'). There are also some issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement. Despite these errors, the sentence structures are varied enough to convey complex ideas, and the errors do not significantly hinder the reader's understanding of your argument.
