Student answer (Band 6.5)

It is very common to ask in interviews about personal information regarding hobbies, intrests or marital status. While some people are in favour of this approach, others are against. I will discuss both views before explaining, why it is not relevant to ask about personal information during an interview.

On the one hand, in this competitive era, it is imperative to have a consistant and regular staff along with full energy and enthusiasm; however, while knowing about every small information of candidates make it easier for best selection. Single persons, for example, is more consistant and focused towards their goals and are less likely to take leaves, whereas matried people especially with children tend to take more leaves to perform their parents responsibilities. Moreover, individual's hobbies and intrests also explains a lot about their dedication towards specific tasks. For instance, having intrest in art and craft clearly shows about creativity and willingness to learn new things. Hence, it is imperative to ask personal question to build a consistant and dedicated team.

On the other hand, judging someone's overall calibra on the basis of personal information is not a right margin to find a good employee. Despite being marrried, a person can be efficient, focused and way more creative than others. With years of experience and dedication, they can resolve the issues in fraction of seconds comapre to single newcomers. There are bunch of examples of renowned people who touched hieghts in their fields after having kids; for example, 'Rehana', a famous hollywood singer . She is mother of four kids, but is still one of the most highest paid singers in singing industry. Moreover, a person whose hobby is scrolling phone may be a technosavy and can best perform in technology. Hence, it is worthless to ask personal information and measure their capabilities.

To conclude, in my opinion, although asking personal information to inquire about their skills and performance is okay, it is worthless to judge one's capabilities and dedication based on few question unless they are recruited and show their efficiency and consistancy.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on personal information in job interviews and clearly stating the writer's own opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended and supported with reasons and examples, such as discussing marital status, family responsibilities, and hobbies like art and crafts. While some of the supporting points, like the example of the singer 'Rehana', are slightly unconventional for a job interview context, they successfully illustrate the writer's perspective that personal life does not dictate professional capability. The development is coherent and meets the criteria for Band 7, as all parts of the prompt are fully addressed with a clear overall position.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay presents a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The introduction outlines the essay's structure, and body paragraphs are clearly marked with traditional cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different perspectives. However, referencing and cohesive devices occasionally feel slightly mechanical or are impacted by awkward phrasing, such as 'while knowing about every small information of candidates make it easier'. Despite these minor flaws, the overarching progression of ideas is easy to follow, justifying a Band 7 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some attempts at less common items, such as 'competitive era', 'imperative', and 'technosavy'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'consistant' (consistent), 'intrests' (interests), 'matried' (married), 'calibra' (caliber), 'comapre' (compared), and 'hieghts' (heights). While these inaccuracies do not impede communication and the writer's meaning remains clear, the frequency of lexical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band, placing it solidly at Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors that affect accuracy. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('Single persons, for example, is more consistant'), awkward prepositional phrases ('ask personal question' instead of 'questions'), and incorrect article usage. While complex sentences are attempted, they are often faulty, and the number of grammatical inaccuracies places the performance at Band 5.5, which rounds to Band 6 under positive marking principles given that meaning is generally clear.
