Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this contemporary epoch, interviwers sometimes ask personal questions from the candidates, such as their hobbies, likes, and their marital status. Some people believe this information helps employers so they can know interviewees better: however others think opposite because some people may not be comfortable in sharing personal information also this is irrelevant to job positions. This essay will discuss both perspectives and I will share my opinion in the conclusion.

To begin with, there are various reasons why employers ask personal questions. First and foremost is that, they try to know the candidate by asking about their family background and this can help them to explore the emotional side of a interviwee. Furthermore, this information helps interviewer to make wise decisions. When they know interests of a person so they can give job according to candidate's choice. For example, some employer think married person are more responsible and stay longer in one company, which can help employers to reduce employee retention cost.

On the other hand, it is often argued that questions in job interviews should be related to educational qualifiactions and work experiences, because most people are not comfortable in sharing their personal details. They believe personal and professtinal life sould be separated as they can maintain a work-life balance. Moreover, personal information does not help to change work productivity but their previous experience does. For instance, a person good in gardening would not be helpful in production but the previous job experience will definitely helpful.

In conclusion, although many people believe asking personal questions in job interviwes are relevant as they can help to know the candidate, others argue that only education and work experience related question should ask because those are appropriate. I believe interviewer should ask both type of questions but more questions should ask related to job.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on whether personal information should be requested by employers during job interviews and clearly provides the writer's own opinion in the introduction and conclusion. Ideas are relevant, such as discussing employee retention and professional qualifications versus personal comfort. However, some arguments are slightly repetitive or under-developed, such as the concluding remark that both types of questions should be asked with an emphasis on job-related ones. The position is clear throughout, and the main arguments are supported with logical reasoning and general examples, aligning well with the Band 6 descriptor.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay is coherent with an overall logical arrangement, dividing ideas into a clear introduction, two body paragraphs representing opposing views, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct thoughts. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'In conclusion', although some referencing and transitional links feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. For instance, the transition between sentences within the body paragraphs occasionally lacks smooth flow, leading to minor disruptions in progression. Overall, the organizational structure meets the criteria for Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating topic-related terms such as 'marital status', 'emotional side', 'educational qualifications', and 'work-life balance'. However, there are several noticeable spelling errors throughout the response, including 'interviwers', 'interviwee', 'qualifiactions', 'professtinal', 'sould', and 'interviwes'. While these errors do not severely impede communication, they reflect a lack of precision and prevent the lexical score from reaching Band 7. Less common lexical items are attempted, but inaccuracies in word choice and spelling place this firmly in the Band 6 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at varied structures such as conditional and relative clauses ('When they know interests of a person so they can give job...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, such as 'ask personal questions from the candidates', 'some employer think married person are', 'work-life balance' mechanics, and double subjects or incorrect verb forms like 'question should ask'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical inaccuracies occur consistently throughout the text, though they rarely impede overall communication. This performance aligns with Band 5.0.
