Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, It is common for employers to ask job applicants for personal information including their hobbies, interest or marital status. While some masses reckon that such details may assist them to recruit better individuals, however others believe that this is irrelevent to the a person's professional abilities. In my view these information might be usefull in some extent but the details like marrital status generally bears no employment judgement in this matter.

On the one side, asking about hobbies and interets is crucial to understand the candidate's personality, interpersonal skiils and sustainability for a perticular possition. For example, if a pelibian plays a team sport regularly may have developed team spirit, disciplined, cooperation, better communication and have leadership skills. Similarly if a person who volunteers in the community may have empathy and strong sense of responsibility. Therefore it is ok to ask some private information related to the life.

However on the other side, opponents argue that personal information may be kept separate from professional recruitment. This is particularly true in case of marital status which has no significant effect on job responsibilities. In respect to that it may enhance concious or unconcious discrimination. For instance, an employer might significantly assumes that a married employee have more family responsibility and limited flexibility which may lead to less productivity on work.

In the end, personal information like hobbies, interests provide valuable insights regarding someones personality and skills. However marrital status has no value in it and may further enhance discrimination. In my Perspective, these personal questions should be restricted to clear and legimitate connection and requirements of job.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on personal information in job applications—whether hobbies and marital status are relevant—and presents a clear position throughout. Ideas are extended and supported, such as explaining how team sports foster cooperation and leadership. However, there is a slight tendency to over-generalise in parts, such as assuming marital status universally yields no employment judgement. The overall progression of ideas is clear and fulfills the requirements for this band effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, utilizing appropriate cohesive devices such as 'While some masses reckon', 'For example', and 'However on the other side'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt, including introducing the topic, discussing hobbies, examining marital status, and delivering a concluding perspective. Although referencing and cohesion are generally well managed, minor mechanical usage keeps it at this level.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task and attempts less common items with varying degrees of success. There are noticeable lexical errors, such as 'some masses' instead of 'some people', 'irrelevent' with a spelling error, 'usefull in some extent' instead of 'useful to some extent', 'pelibian' instead of 'person' or 'candidate', and 'marrital'. Word choice and spelling errors sometimes impede smooth communication and reveal that control over less common vocabulary is still developing, which places the response firmly at this band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like conditional and relative clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and mechanics, including subject-verb agreement issues ('these information might', 'an employee have'), awkward prepositional patterns, and unnecessary commas after introductory elements like 'Nowadays,'. While these errors do not completely obscure meaning, their frequency indicates that grammatical control is limited, preventing the text from reaching a higher band.
