Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing a letter to request you that please check the papers in locker, which I forget to take it with me. It is really important for me to submit it to the government.

I am Janki shah, I booked room no; 41 for two days on 26 June. After returning back I noticed that I forget to take out my official documents from the locker in the room, which is next to the cub board. Therefore, it is should be over there only.

The documents contain my passport, visa status, and valid BRP card, which I need to submit to the government of UK for verification purpose. This verification process going to be held on 4 July , so I have a time to collect it from the hotel.

Moreover, it is my humble request to the manager that take out the documents from the locker and please give it to the reception, so I will come tomorrow and collect it from there. As locker no; is 2411.

Thank you so much for your help.

yours respectful,

Janki shah

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt: identifying the location of the papers, explaining their importance, and requesting specific action from the manager. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although some phrasing is slightly awkward. The ideas are clearly presented, and the purpose of the letter is immediately apparent. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more detail regarding the specific appearance of the documents to assist the staff in locating them, and ensure the tone remains consistently formal throughout the request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each serving a distinct purpose. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the purpose of the letter to the details of the stay, the importance of the items, and finally the requested action. Cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'After returning back' are used to link sentences, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion. The overall structure is coherent and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to convey the necessary information clearly. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'request you that please check' (should be 'request that you check') and 'cub board' (should be 'cupboard'). While the range is sufficient to communicate the message, it lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands. The student uses basic but functional vocabulary to describe the situation and the items involved.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I forget to take it' (tense error, should be 'forgot'), 'it is should be over there' (incorrect modal usage), and 'I have a time' (article error). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with the use of semicolons in 'room no; 41' and 'locker no; is 2411'. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede the overall meaning of the letter. A greater focus on verb tenses and article usage would improve accuracy.
