Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request about returning the important papers which I forgot in the hotel room last weekend.

Recently, on the last Saturday, I booked a room in your hotel for one of my meetings. I had some important papers with me during that time; however, after that meeting I put the documents in the side table near the bed. On the next day, I was in hurry to board my flight for the upcoming meeting, because of that I did not remember to take that file with me.

In that file, there is some confidential information about my company's profit and upcoming projects, which was my responsibility to keep it secure.

I want to make a humble request for sending that file to my current location via courier. Your this help will not only save my job but also give me a chance of promotion.

I hope you will understand my situation and try your best to help me in that.

Yours Sincerely,

Dhruv Patel.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly state where the papers were left (the side table), explain their importance (confidential company information), and provide a clear request for action (courier delivery). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the communication is immediately clear. To reach a higher band, ensure that the opening and closing salutations are perfectly matched; you used 'Dear Sir' but the prompt provided 'Dear Sir or Madam', and your sign-off 'Yours Sincerely' is standard, but ensure consistency in formal register throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the situation to the explanation and finally the request. You use some cohesive devices such as 'however', 'because of that', and 'not only... but also'. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The use of 'Your this help' is an awkward phrasing that disrupts the flow. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that referencing is more natural would help elevate this score to the next level.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'confidential information', 'upcoming projects', and 'courier'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'request about returning' instead of 'request the return of' and 'Your this help' which is grammatically incorrect. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Focusing on more natural collocations and avoiding awkward phrasing will improve your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'I forgot in the hotel room' (should be 'left in'), 'in hurry' (should be 'in a hurry'), and 'try your best to help me in that' (should be 'help me with that'). These errors are frequent but do not impede communication. To improve, pay closer attention to article usage (a/the) and prepositional phrases. Increasing the number of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band score.
