Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I write to you with the intent of apprising you of an issue that has, of late, become a source of inconvenience to me. Apparently, I stayed at your hotel for a night, and when I came back to my then I realised that I forgot my vital documents in my hotel room number 123.
At first, it sounds like my myth, but when I checked my suitcase, I found that my passport was missing, as you know that it is one of the crucial documents for everyone. It shows our identity, none of us can move from one place to another. I also have to travel for my office work so I need this as soon as possible.
I need your firm support in this matter and would request you to recheck my ascertain room, and send it via courier. Alternatively, I will come to pick it up. I leave it to your best judgment to decide upon the appropriate course of action.
I look forward to your proactive support and prompt action.
Yours faithfully,
Amy

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three bullet points: the location of the papers, their importance, and the requested action. However, the tone is inconsistent. While the opening is formal, phrases like 'it sounds like my myth' are confusing and detract from the professional tone required for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The development of ideas is sufficient, but the explanation of why the documents are important is slightly repetitive. To improve, ensure that the language remains consistently formal and clear throughout the entire response, avoiding colloquial or nonsensical phrasing.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific part of the prompt. The progression of ideas is generally clear, moving from the problem to the explanation and finally the solution. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical. For instance, 'At first' and 'Alternatively' are used, but the transition between the first and second paragraph feels slightly abrupt. The referencing is generally clear, though the phrasing 'my then' in the first paragraph is confusing and disrupts the flow of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary range is adequate for the task, but there are several instances of awkward word choice and misuse of collocations. For example, 'apprising you of an issue' is formal, but 'it sounds like my myth' is an incorrect use of vocabulary that obscures meaning. Additionally, 'ascertain room' is not a standard collocation; 'the room I stayed in' or 'my room' would be more natural. While the student attempts to use more sophisticated language, the lack of precision in these instances limits the score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I realised that I forgot' (should be 'had forgotten') and 'none of us can move' (which is a run-on or comma splice issue). The sentence 'I leave it to your best judgment to decide upon the appropriate course of action' is well-constructed and demonstrates good control. However, the frequency of minor errors, particularly with verb tenses and word order, prevents a higher score. Proofreading for basic tense consistency would significantly improve the accuracy.
