Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter requesting you to find the papers that I left in your hotel's conference room the day before checking out of the hotel.
Last week I had reserved a suite in your hotel, I loved your hospitality and overall service of the staff. But one day before checking out I had an important meeting in the conference room of your hotel which is where I left some of my important papers. I really need those papers because they are my travel documents which I will be needing for my travel to Australia next week, without these papers my journey to Australia won't be possible. I would like you to check with the cleaning staff personally and see if they find any papers in the conference room last week and if you find them I would like you to mail them to my address as soon as possible so I can board my next week's flight to Australia.
I would be grateful if you could pay close attention to this matter and help me with this. Thank you for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Sarish

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (the conference room), explained their significance (travel documents for Australia), and provided a clear request for action (checking with staff and mailing them). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that the flow between the explanation of the importance of the papers and the request for action is slightly more seamless, as the current transition feels a bit abrupt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'but', 'because', and 'if', which help the reader follow your train of thought. However, the paragraphing is somewhat limited; the main body paragraph is quite long and contains multiple distinct ideas. Breaking this into two smaller paragraphs—one for the explanation of the situation and one for the specific request—would improve the overall structure and readability. Additionally, some transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated to improve the flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'hospitality', 'conference room', and 'consideration' correctly. The language is functional and clear. However, the vocabulary is somewhat repetitive, particularly the use of 'important papers' and 'Australia'. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more varied synonyms or collocations to describe the documents or the situation. For example, instead of repeating 'important', you could use 'crucial', 'essential', or 'vital'. The current range is sufficient for the task but lacks the flexibility and precision required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter requesting you to...' and 'I would be grateful if you could...'. While the meaning is always clear, there are some minor grammatical slips, such as 'see if they find any papers' (should be 'found') and 'which is where I left' (a bit wordy). Punctuation is generally accurate, though some sentences are quite long and could benefit from better use of commas or semicolons to improve clarity. The grammar is generally stable and does not impede communication.
