Student answer (Band 7.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inquire about missing documents last week in your hotel.
There was an annual meeting of Cressant company in Lily hall at Blue Mountain hotel on last Friday evening. I was one of the organizer of the annual meeting, after the event finished I collected all my documents and left the Lily hall with my colleague. However, we stayed at the reception for about 10 minutes and talk to the receptionist about our event and unfortunately, I think I have left my documents on the counter.
Those files are so important for our company as it contains confidential documents such, as our annual budget and meeting minutes, and important notes that I have taken within the meeting. Moreover, I should hand over those to my immediate manager before next Monday.
I would be grateful if you can check with receptionist and contact me. Even though I have a hectic work schedule this week I would be able to come and collect it by myself.
Thank you very much for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response at your earliest convenient.
Yours faithfully,
Nipuni Rajapaksha.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the location where the papers were left (the reception counter), explain their importance (confidential budget and meeting minutes), and state your desired action (requesting the manager to check and contact you). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. You have fulfilled all requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'However', 'Moreover', and 'Even though' to link your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be slightly more sophisticated to reach a higher band. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the progression of information is logical throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'confidential', 'hectic', and 'inquire'. There are some minor word choice issues, such as 'one of the organizer' (should be plural 'organizers') and 'earliest convenient' (should be 'earliest convenience'). However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more varied vocabulary to describe the documents or the situation. The current range is sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'inquire about missing documents last week in your hotel' (which is slightly awkward phrasing) and 'I should hand over those to my immediate manager' (should be 'hand them over'). Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in 'such, as'. Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not hinder the reader's understanding. The letter maintains a consistent formal tone throughout.
