Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to enquire about some important papers I have forgotten in the hotel room. I was in Islamabad to attend an important meeting on 8th of June. I checked-in in the hotel around 4pm in the evening after my meeting.

I was in the room 2104 on the 2nd floor. I had some important documents which I kept in a blue file. I clearly remember that I placed it carefully in the side drawer, in the one which was on the right side of the bed towards the window.

The documents are very important for me, it includes some receipts, meeting briefs along with my driving license. If I don't find them it will be a great problem for me the most urgent is my driving license.

Could you please help me find the documents? If you get them, please contact me on [redacted phone] or email me on [redacted email].

I am looking forward to a positive reply.

Yours faithfully,

Sarah.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (room 2104, side drawer), explained their importance (receipts, meeting briefs, and a driving license), and provided a clear request for action (contacting you via phone or email). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, ensuring the reader understands the urgency of the situation. You have fully met the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your narrative easily. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I clearly remember' and 'If you get them' to link ideas. While the flow is clear, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat simple. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a wider variety of linking words or phrases to improve the transition between sentences and paragraphs.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use specific terms like 'enquire', 'receipts', and 'meeting briefs' correctly. However, the vocabulary is generally functional and lacks a wider range of less common or more sophisticated lexical items. There are no significant errors in word choice that impede communication, but the language remains quite standard. To improve, try to incorporate more precise adjectives or more formal collocations to enhance the professional tone of your correspondence.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically accurate. There are a few minor slips, such as 'I checked-in in the hotel' (should be 'checked into') and 'it includes' (should be 'they include' to agree with 'documents'). Despite these minor errors, your meaning is always clear, and the punctuation is generally correct. You show good control over basic grammar, which makes your writing easy to read and professional.
