Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to bring your attention to some important papers which I left in your hotel room.
I stayed at your hotel in room 302 last night in order to attend a business meeting in the city. While working under considerable stress I missed packing these papers in my suitcase during checkout. I can recall from my memory that they were placed on the bedside table in a yellow envelope.
These documents are important to me because it consists of some crucial information related to my business partnership. By losing this paperwork I can be under serious problems as this information should remain confidential.
I kindly request you to provide me any information you have on this topic and please keep the papers with you until they are retrieved by someone from your hotel.
Thankyou for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,
Suman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (bedside table in a yellow envelope), explained their importance (confidential business partnership information), and provided a clear request for action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the urgency of the situation. The response is focused and maintains a consistent purpose throughout, meeting all the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the context of the stay to the specific problem and finally the requested action. Cohesive devices such as 'While', 'because', and 'as' are used effectively to link ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the flow of information is smooth. The use of referencing is clear, and the letter follows a standard, professional structure that makes it easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal business context, such as 'considerable stress', 'crucial information', and 'confidential'. There is a sufficient range to convey your message with precision. While the vocabulary is generally accurate, there are minor areas for refinement, such as the phrasing 'I can recall from my memory', which is slightly redundant. Overall, the lexical choices are natural and contribute to the professional tone of the letter, showing a good awareness of style.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The letter uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most sentences are error-free, and the grammar is generally accurate. There is a minor subject-verb agreement error in the sentence 'it consists of some crucial information' (should be 'they consist' to refer to 'documents'). Additionally, 'provide me any information' would be more naturally phrased as 'provide me with any information'. Despite these minor slips, the control of grammar is strong, and the meaning is never obscured. Punctuation is used correctly throughout.
