Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Manager,

I am writing this letter to inform you about the essential meeting documents that I forgot in your hotel. I think when I was getting my clearance done I forgot the file on the reception desk. I have reached the venue where the meeting is scheduled now. The meeting is about to start in 2 hours. It will be nearly impossible for me to come and collect the documents and reach back to the venue timely. I cant afford to get late as I have to host the meeting with my remarks.

These documents are mandatory as I need to get these signed from the CEO of other company. Its the matter of company repute and I was the one who was supposed to organize the meeting.

I humbly request you to please consider my request and respond it on priority basis. I apologize for the inconvinence. I will look forward for your response.

Yours Sincerely,

Ayesha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state where the papers were left (reception desk), explain their importance (needed for the CEO's signature and company reputation), and provide a clear request for action. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. However, the development of ideas is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could provide more specific details about the appearance of the file or suggest a specific method for returning the documents, such as a courier service, which would demonstrate a more thorough engagement with the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized, with a clear progression from the problem to the explanation and finally the request. Paragraphing is used, though the structure is a bit cramped. You use some cohesive devices like 'These documents' and 'However' (implied), but the flow could be improved with a wider variety of linking words. For instance, the transition between the location of the papers and the urgency of the meeting is a bit abrupt. Using more sophisticated transitions would help the ideas flow more naturally and improve the overall coherence of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'mandatory', 'clearance', and 'repute'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'respond it on priority basis' (should be 'respond to it as a matter of priority') and 'inconvinence' (spelling error). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. Expanding your repertoire of formal collocations and ensuring accurate spelling will help elevate your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'I cant afford to get late' (should be 'I cannot afford to be late') and 'I will look forward for your response' (should be 'I look forward to your response'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, though some phrasing is slightly informal for a business letter. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do indicate a need for more consistent control over verb patterns and prepositions to reach the next level.
