Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to ask for an important papers which I accidentally left in your hotel.

Last Sunday, I was stayed in your hotel room 201 and by mistake I left a crucial papers on the computer desk. While making the presentation of my business I used those papers and I forget to keep those back in a bag.

Since these papers includes confidential information about my business, those are very essential for me. My business can not bear the cost of losing them. It will be very risky not only for me but also for my business if any of our competitors read those confidential information.

I would appreciate it if you could check and let me know if it's still there. I would be grateful if you could make the necessary arrangements to deliver them at your earliest convenience. I am ready to pay all the expenses it may have. Looking forward for your prompt response on this matter.

Yours Sincerely,

Sapna

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identify the location of the papers (room 201, computer desk), explain their importance (confidential business information), and state your request (check for them and arrange delivery). The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the urgency of the situation. To improve, ensure that you maintain a consistent tone throughout and avoid minor grammatical slips that can slightly distract from the professional nature of the request.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the task, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Since', 'While', and 'I would appreciate it if', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between sentences could be smoother in some places. For example, the connection between the second and third paragraphs could be strengthened with more varied linking words to improve the overall progression of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'confidential information', 'at your earliest convenience', and 'prompt response' are well-chosen and appropriate for a formal context. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'ask for an important papers' (should be 'ask for some important papers' or 'the important papers') and 'make the presentation' (should be 'give the presentation'). Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and does not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I was stayed' (should be 'I stayed'), 'a crucial papers' (should be 'crucial papers'), and 'I forget to keep' (should be 'I forgot to keep'). These errors are frequent but do not prevent the reader from understanding your meaning. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and tense consistency, particularly when describing past events. Increasing the variety of complex structures while maintaining accuracy will also help improve your score.
