Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to inform you that my last visit to Enugu which i lodged in one of your suits, dated 12th june 2026, I paid for the Royal suit, room 128 and I came with B.SC certificate and i remember placing it under one the dinning table but unfortunately forgot to bring it with me while leaving, please it is a very important document without it, I can't go for the interview i have this coming sunday. This letter is to plead for your help to waybill it to Abakaliki.

It was my first time in Enugu and your resort was recommended to me by a friend who is a regular customer and i must say that i enjoyed my stay, but one of the reasons i think i left my certificate there was because of the rush to meet up a company bus going back to Abakaliki. Befor writing you i had already called the receptionist who confirm that it is in her possession.

I will be going for an interview and is one of the requirement please sir kindly send it via waybill to me

Thanks for your attention .

Stanley Agubo.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state where the papers were left (under the dining table in room 128), explain their importance (needed for an upcoming interview), and provide a clear request for the manager to send them via waybill. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the structure is slightly informal in places. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the urgency of the situation. To reach a higher band, ensure that the purpose of the letter is stated more concisely in the opening paragraph.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your narrative. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'but unfortunately' and 'because of', to link ideas. However, the progression between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical, and the flow could be improved with more varied transition words. For example, the transition between the description of the stay and the request for the waybill is a bit abrupt. Paragraphing is present, but the final paragraph is very short and could be better integrated into the main body or conclusion to improve the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'lodged', 'possession', and 'requirement'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'waybill it' (which is more of a verb-noun confusion) and 'dinning table' (spelling error). The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly, but it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. Focusing on more formal collocations and ensuring correct spelling of common words will help improve your score in this area.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. For instance, there are run-on sentences, such as the first paragraph, and issues with capitalization (e.g., 'i', 'june'). Subject-verb agreement and tense consistency also need attention, such as 'the receptionist who confirm' instead of 'confirmed'. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on sentence boundaries and basic grammatical accuracy will significantly improve the quality of your writing.
