Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope all is well.

My name is Shivam Desai, and I am an assistant manager of Virox Technologies Inc.

I am writing this letter to you to inform that we have arranged an annual meeting of our company in the meeting room of your hotel in the last weekend.

Our meeting was lasted for 4 hours where we discussed plenty of things about the company's future and plans. I remember during our meeting, I made some notes related to the same.

Now when I am starting a fresh new week at office. I suddenly remember that the notes which I made during the meeting, I forgot it on the meeting table itself.

As mentioned previously, these papers are very important to plan company's future, and as the assistant manager of the company I will have to arrange the required manforce to achieve the target. In addition, I had written some rough numbers after discussing those with CEO and manager.

As a manager of the hotel, I request you to retrieve these papers on my behalf. If you are able to do it sucessfully , it will be much appreciated.

I look forward to hear positive news at your earliest convenience.

Thank you and have a pleasant day.

Sincerely,

Shivam Desai

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have addressed all three bullet points of the task effectively. You clearly identified where the papers were left (the meeting table), explained their importance (planning the company's future and rough notes for the CEO), and provided a clear request for the manager to retrieve them. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning. To reach a higher band, ensure that the explanation of the papers' importance is slightly more concise to maintain a better flow.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. Paragraphing is used, although the body paragraphs could be more distinctly separated to improve readability. You used some cohesive devices such as 'In addition' and 'As mentioned previously', which help the flow. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each paragraph focuses on a single clear theme to enhance the overall progression of your ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'retrieve', 'convenience', and 'assistant manager'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'manforce' (should be 'workforce' or 'staff') and 'sucessfully' (spelling error). You also used 'plenty of things', which is a bit informal for this context. To improve, focus on using more precise professional collocations and ensure accurate spelling of common business terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'our meeting was lasted' (should be 'lasted'), 'I inform that we have arranged' (should be 'inform you that'), and 'I look forward to hear' (should be 'hearing'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of gerunds after phrases like 'look forward to'.
