Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writitng to request my documents I left behind during my stay at your hotel. I was booked from July 2nd to july 4th, 2026 since I had to attend a conference during that time. Unfortunately, I left important papers in the cupboard of my room 206, where I stayed.
Upon arrival from the conference, I locked those documents in the safe which had a code. Those papers are vital for me as those include all the confidential information from the conference including details of the attendees. This may cause a potential identity theft, or crucial personal information of them. As I had to leave early morning, I left it here by mistake.
I would request these papers to be handed over to my colleague who is still staying at the hotel. His name is Joyce Mensah. She was one of the organizers for this event. She has been alotted room no. 207 next to mine.
Thank you for time and assistance. I would appreciate if you write me back after the documents are handed over to her for confirmation.
Sincerely,
Sneha thakur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers (room 206), explained their importance regarding confidential conference data and potential identity theft, and provided clear instructions for the manager to hand them over to your colleague. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the situation described in the task instructions.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a specific purpose, moving from the reason for writing to the explanation of the documents, and finally to the request for action. Cohesive devices such as 'Upon arrival', 'As I had to', and 'This may cause' are used effectively to link sentences. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different stages of your request. The flow of information is smooth and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'confidential information', 'vital for me', and 'handed over' are used accurately. There are a few minor slips, such as 'alotted' (spelled 'allotted') and 'writitng' (spelled 'writing'), but these do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated collocations or precise terminology related to business or travel, such as 'misplaced' instead of 'left behind' or 'sensitive data' instead of 'important papers'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'I was booked from July 2nd to July 4th, 2026 since I had to attend a conference' shows a good grasp of complex sentence construction. While there are occasional errors, such as 'I left it here' (referring to plural 'papers') and 'Thank you for time' (missing 'your'), these are minor and do not cause confusion. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and verb tenses is generally strong.
