Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inquire about my important documents that I left in your hotel during my recent stay. The room I stayed in is A1232.

It happened when I was arranging an file containing some crucial documents, I got a phone call, at that time I might have misplaced some of the documents on the closest desk near the main window.

Futhermore, the papers contains all my business details which need to be submitted at Scotia Bank next week. There is a no possible way to reobtain the documents in such a short period of time.

Additionally, I would appreciate it if you could confirm that the papers are still there or not and give me a follow up. Moreover, I would also be grateful if you could keep the documents safely with you once found, untill I collect them up.

Thank you for your time and attention. I look forward to your prompt response.

Your faithfully,

Smit Surti

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly identified the location of the papers, explained their importance regarding the bank submission, and provided a clear request for the manager to secure them. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more detail about the appearance of the documents to help the staff locate them more efficiently, but overall, the task is fully satisfied.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. You used paragraphing effectively to separate the different points of your request. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Additionally', and 'Moreover' are used to link your sentences. While some of these transitions feel slightly mechanical, they function well to guide the reader through the letter. The structure is clear and easy to follow throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'inquire about', 'crucial documents', and 'prompt response' are used correctly. There are a few minor errors, such as 'reobtain' (which is less common than 'retrieve') and 'collect them up' (which is slightly informal). However, these do not impede communication. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations to enhance the professional tone of your writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'the papers contains' (subject-verb agreement error) and 'there is a no possible way' (article/determiner error). Additionally, 'Your faithfully' is incorrect; it should be 'Yours faithfully'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not cause difficulty for the reader. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help raise your score in this area.
