IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Write a letter to the manager of the hotel. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to address my concern that I left my important documents in the hotel room where I stayed last weekend.

I stayed in room number 781 in your hotel on 22 and 23 July and I believe that I used one of the drawers next to the bed to safely keep my papers in. I left the hotel in a rush to catch my flight.

These documents consist of my original academic achievements and work permit visa which is my lifetime success. I am joining a job soon and I need to present such documents. Also, it is quite difficult to arrange new papers as it requires more time and expense to renew them.

I would greatly appreciate it if you could inform your housekeeping team to search for them and mail them to my home address. I can cover the delivery cost as well.

Looking forward to a prompt and positive response.

Yours faithfully,

Nisha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.5

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly identified the location (room 781, drawer next to the bed), explained the importance of the documents (original academic achievements and work permit visa for a new job), and provided a clear request for the manager to search for and mail the items. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a hotel manager. The ideas are well-developed and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, meeting all the requirements of the task effectively.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose, moving from the introduction of the issue to the details of the items, the explanation of their importance, and finally the call to action. Cohesive devices such as 'Also', 'I would greatly appreciate it if', and 'Looking forward to' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The structure is coherent, and the flow of information is natural and easy to follow throughout the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and precisely. Phrases like 'original academic achievements', 'prompt and positive response', and 'safely keep' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the context, it lacks a high degree of sophistication or idiomatic flair that would push it into the highest band. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation, and the language used is perfectly suited to the formal nature of the request.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The letter displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Your control over grammar is generally strong, with very few errors. For example, 'I am writing to address my concern that I left...' and 'I would greatly appreciate it if you could inform...' are grammatically sound and complex. Punctuation is used correctly throughout. While there are no major errors, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited, which is why it sits at a solid 7.0 rather than higher. The communication is entirely clear and error-free in most instances.
